Dear Deputy Minister,
Congratulations on your appointment as Deputy Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education.
On behalf of the Universities and Schools Council for the Education of Teachers Cymru (USCET Cymru), we would like to extend our warm congratulations and best wishes as you take up your new responsibilities.
USCET Cymru is part of the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET) which acts as an independent and authoritative voice on, and supports the quality, sustainability and professionalism of, teacher education by encouraging cohesive partnerships, engaging constructively with stakeholders and drawing on research from across the UK and internationally.
In April we took over the role of Executive Directors of UCET and we are working hard to build strong relationships with key stakeholders across the UK in order to ensure UCET maximises its potential as an organisation and contributes in meaningful ways to policy conversations and innovations.
USCET Cymru brings together the accredited Initial Teacher Education partnerships in Wales, representing universities and schools working collaboratively to develop the future teaching workforce. While our core focus is Initial Teacher Education, we also see teacher education as a core function of the higher education system and a key contributor to the wider tertiary education landscape in Wales.
Teacher education in Wales is delivered through higher education institutions in close partnership with schools, and plays a critical role not only in preparing school teachers but also in supporting wider workforce development across the education system, including progression into leadership, further education, and Welsh-medium provision.
We recognise the importance of your portfolio in shaping a coherent and connected tertiary education system, and the opportunities this presents to strengthen progression routes, workforce supply, and professional learning across education and skills.
USCET Cymru values its constructive relationships with Welsh Government and other key stakeholders. We stand ready to act as both a supportive partner and a constructive critical friend, offering evidence and insight from across university–school partnerships to inform policy development and implementation.
We would welcome the opportunity to meet with you at a convenient time to explore how teacher education within HEIs can continue to contribute to your priorities for skills, tertiary education and workforce development.
Once again, congratulations on your appointment. We look forward to working with you in the years ahead.
Yn gywir iawn / Yours sincerely,
Professor Stefanie Sullivan & Professor Joanna McIntyre
