Dear Cabinet Minister,

Congratulations on your appointment as Cabinet Minister for Education and the Welsh Language.

On behalf of the Universities and Schools Council for the Education of Teachers Cymru (USCET Cymru), we would like to extend our warmest congratulations and best wishes as you take up this important role.

USCET Cymru is part of the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers (UCET) which acts as an independent and authoritative voice on, and supports the quality, sustainability and professionalism of, teacher education by encouraging cohesive partnerships, engaging constructively with stakeholders and drawing on research from across the UK and internationally.

In April we took over the role of Executive Directors of UCET and we are working hard to build strong relationships with key stakeholders across the UK in order to ensure UCET maximises its potential as an organisation and contributes in meaningful ways to policy conversations and innovations.

USCET Cymru represents the accredited Initial Teacher Education (ITE) partnerships in Wales, bringing together universities and schools in the shared endeavour of preparing the next generation of teachers, working alongside the wider UCET network across the four nations, to support the sharing of expertise, evidence and professional practice. As a sector, we are proud of the progress made through Wales' distinctive partnership approach to teacher education and remain committed to supporting the delivery of high-quality, research-informed teacher preparation across the country.

We recognise the significant opportunities and challenges facing Welsh education, including workforce sustainability, equity, strengthening Welsh-medium provision, and the ongoing development of the Curriculum for Wales. Initial Teacher Education has a critical role to play in supporting these priorities and in developing the profession for the future.

USCET Cymru values its constructive relationships with Welsh Government and other key stakeholders. As the representative body for ITE partnerships, we stand ready to act as both a supportive partner and a constructive critical friend, sharing expertise and perspectives from across the sector to help inform policy and practice.

Given your own background in education and teacher development, we look forward to working with you and would welcome the opportunity to meet at a convenient time to discuss the contribution ITE can make to your priorities for education and the Welsh language.

Once again, congratulations on your appointment.

Yn gywir iawn / Yours sincerely,

Professor Stefanie Sullivan and Professor Joanna McIntyre
