Promoting Quality in Teacher Education

Letter to Rt. Hon. Gillian Keegan, MP, Secretary of State for Education (Oct 22)

27 October 2022

Dear Secretary of State,

I am writing to congratulate you on your appointment as Secretary of State and to request an early meeting to discuss a range of important issues, including teacher supply, the review of the ITE Market and the availability of high-quality CPD for teachers.

The ongoing review of the ITE Market has caused significant disruption to the teacher education sector and to the teacher supply base that our schools depend on. We have sought, while exercising our right to speak frankly and openly when required, to work constructively with your predecessors and with officials on the review and are disappointed that pragmatic suggestions we have made have not been given the consideration they deserved. We would like to engage in further discussions about how we can maintain the existing teacher supply base and ensure that new teachers receive the high-quality, academically robust and contextualizable teacher education they need.

There are other issues which we would like to discuss. The country faces significant teacher supply issues which go beyond those caused by the outcome of the Market Review. The availability of CPD, such as that delivered at master’s level and which covers more than the ECF and NPQs, also needs to be reviewed.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

James Noble-Rogers

Executive Director
