Promoting Quality in Teacher Education

What we do

UCET is an independent, professional organisation funded solely by its member institutions, universities, colleges and others providing accredited HE level teacher education and engaging in education research in the UK. UCET has more than 90 member institutions, including nearly 100% of relevant HEIs. It is governed by an Executive Committee elected by representatives of its member organisations, and has forums for the discussion of initial teacher education for primary and early years teachers; Initial Teacher Education for secondary teachers; teacher education for the post-compulsory sector; research & international issues; and the continuing professional development of teachers. It has a separate committee for members in Northern Ireland and in Wales is part of the Universities and Schools Council for the Education of Teachers (USCET). It works in partnership with a number of other organisations, including: the Scottish Teacher Education Committee (STEC); the British Education Research Association (BERA); Universities UK; Guild HE; the Teacher Education Advancement Network (TEAN); The National Association for Primary Teacher Education Committee (NAPTEC); the International Council on Education for Teaching (ICET) and the National Association for School Based Teacher Training (NASBTT).

Strategic plan for 2020-2025.

UCET acts as a national forum for the discussion of matters relating to the education of teachers and to the study of education and educational research in the university sector. It provides a network for the exchange of information about the work of its members.

Our Vision is for high educational and personal achievement for all learners through excellence in teacher education.

Our mission is to act as an independent and authoritative voice on teacher education while supporting the quality, sustainability and professionalism of teacher education by encouraging cohesive partnerships, engaging constructively with stakeholders and drawing on research from across the UK and internationally.

UCET provides invaluable and cost-effective support to its membership, both collectively and at institutional level. Our work includes:

UCET membership offers excellent value for money, with a flat rate annual subscriptions of just over £4,000 for most members, and £2,000 for smaller institutions with 30 or fewer trainees. By comparison, the TES charges £6-£12,000 for advertisements, something that UCET can do in a more targeted way for free. Education consultants often charge up to £700 a day to provide advice, while attendance is free at UCET forums (and forum extra meetings) and morning symposiums; charges of just over £40 compare well to a cost of around £200 for similar events.
