The Sarah Fielden Lecture Series: Thursday 30 March, 4-6pm
“Constructing Teacher Identities: Representations of Teachers in the Print Media”
Professor Nicole Mockler (University of Sydney, Australia)
Professor Nicole Mockler (University of Sydney, Australia) will be visiting Manchester and presenting a lecture on her recently published book ‘Constructing Teacher Identities: How the Print Media Define and Represent Teachers and their Work’.
This lecture will draw on a large research project that employed a systematic exploration of print media discourses around teachers and their work, using over 65,000 articles published in Australian newspapers from 1996 to 2020, reported in Constructing Teacher Identities: How the Print Media Define and Represent Teachers and Their Work.
The lecture will focus on the use of large-scale corpus-assisted analysis and close qualitative analysis to identify and explore changing representations of teachers in the print media over this 25 year period in the Australian context. It will complement this with comparative analysis of representations from Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US.
It theorises media representations as key contributors to the cultural-discursive arrangements that frame teachers’ work, and argues that as such, they hold significant implications for the teaching profession.
The lecture will be offered in hybrid format, in Ellen Wilkinson C5.1 and via zoom.
