2008: Dr Pamela Moffett, Stranmillis University College

Pamela Moffett is a Senior Lecturer at Stranmillis University College, a College of Queen's University, Belfast, where she teaches Curriculum Mathematics on BEd (Primary) and PGCE programmes. She studied Mathematics at the University of Warwick in England before undertaking a PGCE at Stranmillis. Pamela began her teaching career at the Armstrong Primary School in Armagh, where she co-ordinated Numeracy across the school. She joined the staff at Stranmillis University College in September 2000 and since then she has completed her PhD at Queen's University, Belfast.

Pamela has a keen interest in research and development in mathematics education. In 2007, she travelled to Budapest as part of the university college's SOCRATES/ERASMUS staff mobility scheme. She spent one week at Eötvös Loránd University, where she gained an insight into the Hungarian education system and primary mathematics curriculum. She also had the opportunity to observe mathematics lessons in a number of primary schools.

Pamela used the 2008 UCET travel scholarship to visit the Freudenthal Institute at Utrecht University in the Netherlands and the Centre for Mathematics Education at Manchester Metropolitan University in England. The purpose of the visits was to investigate aspects of the Dutch approach to mathematics education and to explore the implementation of some of these ideas in schools in England.
